This easy apple crisp dessert is a cozy fall favorite. Tender cinnamon-spiced apples baked beneath a buttery oat crumble that’s golden and crisp. Simple enough for a weeknight, but warm and nostalgic enough for gatherings, it’s the perfect way to celebrate apple season. Serve it with a scoop of ice cream or a drizzle of homemade caramel sauce for a dessert that feels like fall in every bite.
Fill a large bowl half way with cold water and juice of one lemon. Peel and slice all apples, place into lemon water as completed to prevent browning.
Preheat oven to 350 degrees and spray 9x13 baking dish with nonstick spray.
Mix flour, oats, brown sugar, butter, cinnamon and salt by hand until coarse crumbles form. Set mixture aside.
Drain apples and return to mixing bowl. Add sugar, flour and all spices and toss to coat apples evenly.
Pour apple mixture into bottom of prepared baking dish. Top with crumble mixture evenly.
Bake in preheated oven for approximately 45 minutes, until filling is bubbling and topping is golden brown.
Notes
Use cold butter for the topping. Cold butter melts slowly, creating steam pockets that make the crumble golden and crisp instead of greasy or heavy.
Mix apple varieties for the best flavor. A blend of tart and sweet apples (like Granny Smith and Honeycrisp) gives balance and texture that hold up beautifully in baking.
Bake until the center bubbles. That bubbling tells you the filling has thickened properly and the starches in the flour have set.
Cool slightly before serving. It lets the juices settle so every serving holds together while still being perfectly warm and cozy.
